Plum Mustangs 3 - Fox Chapel Foxes 1
Chelsea Magnusen - Plum
5'7" Senior - Setter
Kristy Lagnese - Plum
5'7" Senior - Outside Hitter/Right Side

The Plum Mustangs (8-3) and having already clinched a spot in the 2009 WPIAL Class AAA playoffs as the third place team out of Section 4 AAA journeyed to face their neighboring rivals the fourth place Fox Chapel Foxes (6-5) and already eliminated from the playoffs for the second straight year after having won the section championship in 2007. The Foxes, a team with 10 seniors were playing for pride and a chance to finish with a better section record than they had in 2008 came out playing some determined volleyball. They broke a 6-6 tie in game one by running off 6 consecutive points to take a 11-6 lead and did not look back in taking the first set, 25-14. Plum seemed to wake up from their lethargy in game two. There were (6) ties during this set, the last at 19-all before the Mustangs behind the excellent work behind the service line by Sophomore, Setter, Katie Mower, reeled off the final 6 points of the game to win 25-19, and even the match at 1 set each. That performance in the second game seemed to inspire the Mustangs as our Players-Of-The-Match Senior, Setter, Chelsea Magnusen and Senior, Outside Hitter/Right Side, Kristy Lagnese, continued to be a model of efficiency in piling up the points and separating Plum from Fox Chapel. The Mustangs easily took game three from the Foxes, winning 25-12 and looking ready to end the contest in 4. Plum did just that in finishing off Fox Chapel, 25-21, but the Foxes did not go down without a fight. Fox Chapel rallied from behind in the fourth set and moved within a point at 22-21 before Plum ended their night and their season in tallying the final 3 points of the set. Junior, Outside Hitter, Sophia Manfredi played well in a losing cause for the Foxes (6-6) and is a player to watch for in 2010. Chelsea Magnusen who it was announced Thursday was chosen to the Section 4 AAA All-Section first team for the third consecutive year registered (30) assists, (2) aces and (4) kills and did a superb job in running and leading the attack for the Mustangs. Her running mate, Kristy Lagnese, who earlier today was selected to the Section 4 AAA All-Section first team for the first time in her career contributed (13) kills and (3) aces. The Mustangs (9-3) are a senior-laden squad with 6 Seniors in their top 7 players and think that they will be underrated by whomever their first round opponent is in next week's WPIAL Class AAA Playoffs. They showed tonight that they can
elevate their game when they need to in order to come back and put an opponent away. One gets the feeling that Chelsea and Kristy have their minds set on making sure that the Mustangs are a tough out in those playoffs

Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 3 – Geibel Gators 0
Shannon Hurley – Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions
5’11” Freshman – Outside Hitter

For the second time this year GCC swept Geibel in a non-section battle of Catholic schools in Class A, this time doing it on the road, where the Centurions won for the fifth time in regular season play to enter the playoffs on a three-match winning streak. Part of why these programs have been at or near the top of the heap is their depth, as evidenced by the stellar play of Shannon Hurley, clearly one of the premier freshmen in the WPIAL. Hurley once again played beyond her years and ended the night with 14 kills, three digs, and four blocks, and repeatedly used her powerful spike to overwhelm the Gators’ defense. She got good offensive support and good sets all night from senior middle hitter Maura Maher, who, incidentally, put forth a nice defensive effort with four blocks and three digs, and team chemistry helped the Centurions overcome a slow start. In the first game Geibel built three- and four-point leads on multiple occasions, but Greensburg Central recapture its defensive poise and Hurley took charge, recording four kills to help spark a rally that led to a 26-24 win by the visitors in a seesaw battle. Undaunted, the Gators again built several narrow leads in the second game, but Hurley’s three kills and mean right arm made a difference in another tight decision, 25-23 for the Centurions. In game number three Hurley put the team on her back with seven kills as GCC jumped out to a 6-1, overcame some sloppy mistakes in their own end, and coasted to a 25-19 win to close out the match. Greensburg Central’s playoff run ended in the quarterfinals last year, but the addition of Hurley clearly makes the Section 1 co-champion a much more dangerous bunch.

Seton-LaSalle Lady Rebels 3 - Ambridge Bridgers 2
Bridget Deasy - Seton-LaSalle Lady Rebels
5'9" Senior - Middle Hitter

It was Senior Recognition Night at Seton-LaSalle High School and having already clinched a playoff berth and locked into a third place finish in Section 2 AA, the Lady Rebels had two bits of incentive coming into their match against the Ambridge Bridgers. One was to have their (5) seniors go out with a win in their last home match of their careers and the other was to eliminate the desperate Bridgers from the 2009 WPIAL Class AA playoffs. Ambridge faced a must win situation needing to win tonight's match and again on Thursday at home against Freedom to get their ticket punched for post-season play. The Lady Rebels came out fired up and won the first game, 25-17. However, staring elimination squarely in the face the Bridgers took the game right to Seton-LaSalle and won set two, 25-14. Playing with a great deal of confidence Ambridge took game three, 25-12, and looked very much like a team that was determined and focused on staying alive in the playoff chase. Seton-LaSalle was playing like a team out of sync and appeared to be reeling as they fell behind in game four,10-4. Then Seton-LaSalle found a way to flick on their on switch and outscored Ambridge, 21 to 10, to take the fourth set, 25-20 and send the match to the dramatic "short game". As quickly as Ambridge had jumped out to a 2 sets to 1 advantage, they could not do anything to turn the tide against the Lady Rebels onslaught in the fifth set. Seton-LaSalle broke a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat Ambridge, 15-5 for a thrilling come from behind victory and finish their section record at 8-4. Two players stood out for Ambridge in this heartbreaking loss for the Bridgers. Senior, Middle Hitter, Courtney Parisi played a very strong game in the middle demonstrating power and a deft scoring touch and Sophomore, Setter, Jocelyn Craker, was a consistent playmaker both in the back row and coming to the front of the net. However, it was the character displayed by some of those resolute Lady Rebels seniors that brought Seton-LaSalle back from the precipice of a stinging defeat and put Ambridge back on the bus wondering how did we let this match get away. Each of the Seton-LaSalle seniors made a contribution during the match. Senior, Libero, Jordan Grgurich had 7 digs. Senior, Outside Hitter, Justine Eicker had 7 kills and too many digs to count. Senior, Middle Hitter, Natalie Kist wound up with 5 blocks and 11 kills. Senior, Right Side, Kara Flannery came up big with 3 blocks, 11 kills, 2 huge services aces near the end of game 4 to tie the match at 2 sets each and a 6 point serving streak to finish off game 5. However, the Lady Rebel who provided the most consistent performance throughout the match and is our Player-Of-The-Match is Senior, Middle Hitter, Bridget Deasy. Bridget completed the the match with 3 aces, 6 blocks and 10 kills and competed strongly for supremacy of the middle of the net with Ambridge Middle Hitter, Courtney Parisi. Congratulations Ms. Deasy on playing such as vital role in inspiring Seton-LaSalle to not give up and prove the words of New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra true, "it's never over until it's over".

Upper St. Clair Panthers 3 - Canon-McMillan Big Macs 0
Susan McClean - Upper St. Clair
Senior - Setter

The Upper Saint Clair Panthers were absolutely dominant in ending the playoff hopes of the Canon-Mac Big Macs Tuesday night at USC. The Panthers used outstanding size and athleticism to thump the Big Macs in 3 straight games 25-20, 25-8, and 25-9. On a night when the bangers for USC, Maggie Slowey, Madison Stromberg, Casey Perryman and Kelsey Michenko all had stupendous scoring nights the player of the match for the Panthers is outstanding senior setter Susan McClean. McClean set them all, she set them front, she set them back, and then she sent the Big Macs packing. The Panthers improve to 11-0 in section two and 11-1 overall while the Big Macs fall to 4-7 both in the section and overall.

West Allegheny Indians 3 - Montour Spartans 0
WEST ALLEGHENY SENIORS

West Allegheny entered Thursday night's match with Montour needing a win to make next Tuesday's showdown at South Fayette a battle for the Section 3-AA crown since the Indians suffered their only loss this season to the Lions on September 29. Head coach Lisa Pyrdek's leaders brought it on senior night, sweeping Montour 3-0. West A faced a battle early in game one, but pulled ahead halfway through for a 25-17 triumph. Game two was a lot closer, but thanks to a great serving sequence as the score entered the mid-teens from senior Chelsea Katkich, the Indians pulled ahead and stopped just short of needing extra time in a 25-23 final. The Spartans again battled hard early in game three, and kept it a back-and-forth contest most of the way, but the Indians would not be denied as Katkich came up with a huge spike for the match point in a 25-20 decision. Katkich also had two service aces along with fellow senior Alexa Seybold, whose 20 digs led the way to victory. Other standout seniors in West Allegheny's fourth straight win were Haley Hanczar with eight kills and Korin Wengryn with five blocks.

Jefferson Morgan Rockets 3 - Frazier Commodores 0
Mabel Culp Sr MH Jefferson-Morgan

In a battle for section 5 single A supremacy the Frazier Commodores were 9-0. The challenger and home standing Jefferson Morgan Rockets stood 8-1. When the team took the court both realized this was no regular game. The gym was packed with fans and students from both teams."I heard it was orange and black night that's all I know" said Rocket coach Ron Headlee. " We were so pumped up to see our fans and the gym so full" commented Jefferson Morgan's Mabel Culp. " Seeing the crowd like that made us a little nervous and that was the difference from the last time we played them ' said Frazier's Laurissa Ellis. Back on September 22nd Frazier won the first match 3-1. This time would be oh so different. In game 1 the Rockets jumped to a 6-1 lead but Frazier came back on strong serving by Amber Baughman to tie it at 11. The Rockets took the lead on Mable Culps massive kill shot and grew the lead to 18-12. Frazier wouldn't cutting the lead to 20-16 when Jefferson's Marissa Cameron started to serve. She was lights out and the Rockets won going away 25-17. In game 2 it was a close affair with neither team leading by more than 2 until Frazier took over and went up 16-12, with strong play from Savannah Prue, Laurissa Ellis, and Gena Keebler on the front line as they nullified Culp for the only time during the match. The Rockets crept back to 20-17 when Chelsey Byers stepped up to serve. She reeled off six straight great serves and Frazier trailed 23-20 and Jefferson held on scoring 8 of the last 11 points to win 25-22. In game 3 it was close early but the Rockets took a 5-4 lead and never relinquished it. With the crowd on its feet chanting " Lets go Rockets" hey dominated the final game to win 25-15. Morgan Olsen and Heather Herbert both had long services for the Rockets to pace them. Both team are now tied at 9-1 for the section lead with two games left, and both teams will be headed to the playoffs.

Bishop Canevin Crusaders 3 - Bentworth Bearcats 2
Katelyn Blaich - Bishop Canevin
5'10" Senior - Outside Hitter

Before the match Bentworth Bearcats head coach Greg Spridik described the match between his Bearcats and Bishop Canevin head coach Kevin Walters Crusaders on September 22nd as "one for the ages". That contest went five sets with the Bearcats coming back from a 2 games to 1 hole to win 3 -2. One can only speculate on what he is calling last night's tremendous comeback by Bishop Canevin as the
Crusaders got off the floor and rallied from a 2 sets to none deficit to defeat the Bearcats by scores of 13-25, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24 and 15-9. Before one of the most vocal and enthusiastic crowds of this volleyball season, Bishop Canevin, striving to earn at least a share of a Section Title for the first time since 1999 just refused to lose in spite of their inauspicious start. These two teams have become fierce rivals for supremacy in Section 6 A. Before the match several of the (6) seniors on the Crusaders told me that they thought that this was the year for Bishop Canevin to win the section and to even make it to the state playoffs. They may have accomplished the former with this impressive victory. There are a number of players who contributed to Bishop Canevin defeating a Bentworth team that has only lost (3) matches in the regular season in the past 5 seasons and just their second regular season defeat to a Single A team during this time (Jefferson-Morgan is the other Single A team). Among the heroes for the Crusaders were Sophomore, Libero, Joie Hrapla who led the defense with 23 digs, Junior, Setter, Meghan Cunningham who paced their offense with 24 assists and Junior, Middle Hitter, Dana Heidenreich who had 15 kills with 0 errors and a hitting percentage of .405%. However, it was the former
Terrific 21 Class A Co-Player-Of-The-Week who got Bishop Canevin over the hump and brought them home with the victory, Katelyn Blaich. The 5'10" Outside Hitter was a
presence throughout the match but at no time was she more dominant than in the deciding "short game". With the Crusaders trailing the Bearcats, 4-1, Ms. Blaich took over the set. She recorded not one, not two, not three but 4 straight thunderous kills to take the Crusaders from that deficit to a 6 to 4 advantage that they would never relinquish. Just for good measure Katelyn powered down two more kills in the closing game to keep Bishop Canevin on top. Katelyn finished the match with a ringing double double, 25 kills (with a hitting percentage of .424%) and 10
digs to go along with 2 serving aces and 1 blocking assist. Katelyn would like to study nursing in college and would like to matriculate to California University of
Pennsylvania next fall. It's no surprise that she plans to go into the helping professions. Katelyn was most helpful in inspiring her team to overcome the big hole that they dug for themselves before finding the on switch and providing the Crusaders with the key to victory. Bishop Canevin raises their section record to 8-1 with three matches left to play in the regular season. Bentworth's record falls to 10-1 with just one match left to play in the regular season. Both the Crusaders and the Bearcats expect to make some noise in the WPIAL Class A playoffs this year. There certainly was plenty of noise emanating from the Crusaders gymnasium last night.

Trinity Hillers 3 - Canon-McMillan Big Macs 2
Caitlin Deep Trinity Hillers
5'11" Senior - Middle Hitter

The first word that comes out of Trinity head coach Gretchen Mountain's mouth when asked what does tonight's Player-Of-The-Match mean to her team is leadership. 5'11" Senior, Middle Hitter, Caitlin Deep has been playing the sport for a long time. She is a 10 year volleyball player and a 3-year letter winner in volleyball. Caitlin is a 4-year JO volleyball player and she was named a 2008 All-Section performer. She has seen a lot and in this thrilling back and forth match that went to the dramatic "short game" against the Hillers neighboring rivals the Canon McMillan Big Macs tonight, she had the winning kill on Senior Recognition night to bring Trinity the victory. Canon Mac came into the contest having won their last two matches and needing two wins in their remaining 4 matches (one of those wins needing to come against Ringgold in their regular season finale next Thursday at home) to qualify for the playoffs, won the first set, 25-19. The Big Macs continued their very solid play in taking a 21-16 lead in the second set only to have the Hillers rally to score 10 of the last 13 points in this game to even the match at 1 set apiece, 26-24. Trinity appeared to have taken some of the starch out of Canon McMillan with their comeback in game 2 and they fell rather quietly in game three to the Hillers, 25-12. Trinity appeared to be well in command in game 4 when they led, 21 to 17, before Canon McMillan reached down inside and found the spark to score 8 of the last 10 points in the set to win, 25-23, and force the fifth and deciding set. There were (7) lead changes in the fifth set (3) for the Big Macs but most importantly the Hillers had (4) including the thunderous kill by Caitlin Deep with the match at 17-16, in favor of Trinity to win it, 18-16. Ms. Deep finished her night with 15 kills out of 30 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage with no errors, 8 digs and 4 blocks in the 5 games. The win clinched a playoff spot for Trinity and improved their section record to 8-2 (their 2 losses are to Upper St. Clair) and they remain in second place in Section 2 AAA. Canon McMillan's Section 2 AAA record slips to 4-5 and they need to find those two wins in their final three section matches, Thursday at home against Connellsville, next Tuesday on the road versus Upper St. Clair and then that all-important match at home against Ringgold next Thursday, October 22nd.

South Side Beaver Rams 3 - Our Lady of Sacred Heart Chargers 2
Antoinette Luchini - Our Lady of Sacred Heart
Senior - Setter

This game pitted two of the top teams battling for first place in Class A Section 4. OLSH had the advantage since win, lose or draw they would still be no worse than tied for first place. South Side Beaver on the other hand had to win to be tied for first with OLSH and Avonworth. Even though OLSH was in the top position, they did not take this game lightly. One of the players, and my pick for player of the game, Antoinette "Toni" Luchini, certain didn't take this game lightly. As OLSH's setter, she is one of the keys to the team depsite the tough five game OLSH loss. She was extremely consistent, making sure all of her passes were quick and on target. She too managed to get a pass of her own in on nearly every play. This lead to many great assists to Catherine Roseto, who was another big key to OLSH's offense. With OLSH losing the first two sets, they needed clutch playing from Luchini and she delivered, to help OLSH stay in the game. Lunchini might have not scored the most points, but she had the most assists and made many great plays, which makes her my choice for the player of the game.

October 8, 2009
Elizabeth-Forward Warriors 3 - Steel Valley Ironmen 0
Chelsea Sroka - Elizabeth-Forward - Senior - Setter
Cheyenne Greer- Elizabeth-Forward - Senior - Middle Hitter/Outside Hitter

The night began well for the Elizabeth-Forward Warriors with Senior, Jillian Ulmer singing the national anthem live on the MSA Sports Network and it ended with the Warriors sweeping the Steel Valley Ironmen 3 sets to none for the second time this season. The scores were quite lopsided as Elizabeth-Forward won 25-12, 25-5 and 25-4. A number of Warriors played well in this match. Sophomore, Middle Hitter, Catherine Waters continued her steady development with some very influential play at the net. Senior, Middle Hitter/Right Side, Meghan Bagnell, played solidly and gives
Warriors head coach Lindsay Konias plenty of quality depth on the front row. Fellow Senior, Catherine Peterson does a very good job at finding scoring opportunities for herself at different spots on the hard court. However, the two Elizabeth-Forward players who did an excellent job throughout this match and are our Co-Players-Of-The-Match are Senior, Setter and team captain, Chelsea Sroka and
Senior, Middle Hitter/Outside Hitter, Cheyenne Greer. This dynamic duo made sure that the Warriors were not going to be guilty of looking past the one win Ironmen and ahead to next Tuesday's match at Thomas Jefferson that should determine first place in Section 5 AA in 2009. Chelsea finished the night with a 36% ace serving percentage and was behind the service line for several of Elizabeth-Forward's consecutive point scoring runs of 6 or more points during the match. They had 5 of these runs and even when Steel Valley head coach Erik Jabs called timeout the
Ironmen could not stem the tide. The Warrior who brought the thunder the most consistently tonight was Cheyenne Greer. She was 13 for 16 in attack attempts for an impressive 73% kill percentage. Both of these student-athletes plan to include volleyball in their college future and are open minded as far as their recruitment goes. Steel Valley has a very inexperienced team this year with only 1 starter returning from last season's team that finished in third place and qualified for the playoffs in 2008. They do have a promising Middle Hitter in Sophomore, Breanna
Gardner, to build around. Now the stage is set for the rematch with the Jaguars and if this Tuesday's match is as ferociously played as the 5 set first encounter was, fans should be prepared to see a knock down drag out fight to the finish. The six seniors who are the heart and soul of the Warriors (6-1) are not planning on giving up their Section title to Thomas Jefferson without leaving everything that they have on the court.

October 6, 2009
Mars Planets 3 - Seton-LaSalle Rebels 0
Justine Eicker - Seton-LaSalle
Senior - Outside Hitter

Seton-LaSalle rode a three-game winning streak into Tuesday night's home match with Mars and looked to end the Planets' perfect 7-0 record in Section 2-AA. However, it was not to be on this night as the Rebels lost in straight sets 3-0. Mars set the tone with a 25-11 decision in game one, but Seton-LaSalle fought back in game two, falling just short at 25-21. The Planets jumped out early in game three, and it was enough to stave off a late rally from the Rebels in a 25-14 finish. Senior co-captain Justine Eicker showed why the home team should not be counted out down the stretch, though, coming up with dig after dig all night along with 10 kills, three blocks and four service aces.

October 6th, 2009
Avonworth Antelopes 3 - Our Lady Of Sacred Heart Chargers 0
Katie Werley- Avonworth Junior

The Avonworth Antelopes had revenge on their mind and home court advantage coming into their single A section 4 match up with the OLSH Chargers. Previously at OLSH in September they lost 3-2 for one of their only 2 losses on the season. The first game was close and tied 7 times and no team led by more than 2 until OLSH took a 20-17 lead. For some reason the Antelopes woke up and at this point Katie Werley ran off 8 straight winning serves as her team dominated and came back to win 25-20. In game 2 it was more of the same as the Antelopes services were on and the Chargers had trouble communicating on defense. Avonworth had leads of 10-4, 14-6, and 18-8, before OLSH came back a bit, but it was too little too late and the Antelopes won easily 25-18. In game three it was close early but Avonworth led 4-3 and everything went right for them and wrong for the Chargers. A combination of kills by the Antelopes Lauren Mayernick, and defensive problems for OLSH and soon it was 15-7, then 20-9 Avonworth. In three games the Antelopes rotated 10 players and without a senior on the roster tired the Chargers out. "It was a total team effort," said Antelpoes head coach Doug Vandervort after the game. The Chargers
undefeated coming into the match lost game three 25-13. Avonworth improves to 6-2 in the section and OLSH falls to 7-1 but holds on to first place.

Moon Tigers 3 - Baldwin Highlanders 1
Casey Pattyn - Moon Tigers
5'7" Senior- Setter

It was a special night in many ways for our Player-Of-The-Match 5'7" Senior, Setter, Casey Pattyn. Not only did she play a tremendous match in helping to lead the Tigers to a very important home court victory over the Baldwin Highlanders but as part of her Senior Project, Casey was the organizing force behind last night's "Dig 4 The Cure" event in which all proceeds went to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation (Pittsburgh). She along with fellow Senior, Libero, Maddie Fecko, who handled most of the fundraising aspects of the event play together like "ham and eggs" and both players are not hesitant about leaving some skin on the hard court. The ball always seems to go from one of their hands to the other every time the ball is on the Tigers half of the court and the two of them together were just too much for Baldwin to overcome. Moon won the match in 4 sets by scores of 25-23, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-20. Casey finished the match with an incredible double-double of 49 assists, 11 digs, 4 kills and 2 blocks and finished the match in game four on the right front side of the net with a well placed shot that she hit past two Highlanders front row blockers that fell ever so gently just inside the near sideline. Ms. Pattyn is the fourth Moon Tigers player to be chosen the P-O-T-M in the history of the Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program. The win puts the Tigers (4-2) in a tie for second place in Section 5 AAA with Baldwin (4-2) with each team having 4 section matches remaining including one each with the top ranked AAA girls volleyball team in the state, Mount Lebanon. Senior, Outside Hitter/Right Side Tory Storino, the current T-21 Class AAA Player-Of-The-Week had a very good game for the Highlanders coming up from both the left and right sides and hitting winners to keep her team in the thick of this match. Tory also is not bashful about going on to the deck to keep plays alive for her team. But this night belonged to the third team All-Section choice in 2008, Casey Pattyn, who was determined not to have her Tigers fall to Baldwin twice in the same season and her performance enhanced Moon's chances for a return trip to the WPIAL playoffs in 2009. Casey is an honor student who plans to major in education and hopefully play volleyball in college. She would like to attend West Virginia Wesleyan and play volleyball with her sister Jessica (Moon Class of '08) there.

Upper St. Clair Panthers 3 - Trinity Hillers 2
Madison Stromberg - Upper St. Clair

It wasn't easy, in fact sometimes it seemed downright difficult, but Upper Saint Clair was able to get by Trinity, three games to two last night in Washington to take a commanding lead in AAA section two. The Panthers were fairly dominant behind the strong setting play and powerful spiking of player of the match Madison Stromberg. Stromberg led the Panthers time and time again blasting home key points as they finally were able to put away the fiesty Trinity Hillers. USC won by margins of 25-18, and 25-21 in the first two games and appeared on the verge of a quick night. Trinity though was not ready to call it quits the Hillers rattled off back-to-back wins to force a deciding game five and it was there the bigger and more athletic Panthers were able to win 15-10 behind the right-handed blasts from Stromberg that were set up with such precision by Susan McClean.

October 5, 2009
Mount Lebanon Blue Devils 3 - Upper St. Clair Panthers 0
Casey Perryman - Upper St. Clair
Senior- Middle Blocker

In a highly anticipated regular season match featuring the top ranked AAA girls volleyball team in the state, the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils made the short trip over Route 19 South to play their neighbors and the state's 8th ranked AAA girls volleyball team, the Upper St. Clair Panthers. Both teams were undefeated in regular season matches this season and had not faced one another since the 2007 WPIAL Championship match. Upper St. Clair was moved out of their section when the WPIAL realigned after the 2007 season. The Blue Devils won this reunion by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-22 but not without a struggle. After getting out of the gate pretty fast in game one and building a 12 to 5 lead, Mount Lebanon maintained a lead between 5 and 7 points and took game one, 25-20. The story was much different in games two and three and the player most responsible for Upper St. Clair's improved performance was the Player-Of-The-Match, Senior, Middle Blocker, Casey Perryman. Casey was a thorn in Mount Lebanon's side throughout the match. She won most of her battles at the middle of the net and moved to the outside and hit some impressive winners there as well. However, as a team the Panthers were not able to hold several big leads in games two and three. Upper St. Clair led in game two, 23 to 18, only to watch a poised and hard nosed Blue Devils squad outscore them 8 to1 to win game two, 26-24. In game three Upper St. Clair led all the way in building a 21-16 advantage only to have Mount Lebanon run off 7 consecutive points and score 9 of the game's last 10 points and fall short, 25-22. Casey Perryman ended the night with 10 kills, 6 digs and 5 blocks and kept leading the Panthers to those big leads that they were unable to hold against the hard charging Blue Devils. Mount Lebanon head coach Dawn Begor said before the match that if her team could beat Upper St. Clair tonight she expected them to run the table and wind up with the top seed in the AAA playoffs. That remains to be seen. One thing is for sure though. Mount Lebanon is a very talented and deep team that has their eyes set on winning another WPIAL Title as they did in 2007. If Upper St. Clair had been able to maintain their focus and finish games two and three the outcome of this match could have been different. Ms. Perryman performed valiantly in defeat and her efforts make her the first player in the history of the Terrific 21 girls volleyball program to be chosen the P-O-T-M three times. Casey consistently demonstrates a diverse skill set on the hard court and plays the game with a great deal of savvy. She truly is a tower of power for the Panthers. Congratulations Casey on earning this high level of recognition.

South Side Beaver Rams 3 - Avonworth Antelopes 0
Kara Bucklen - South Side Beaver Rams
5'9" Junior -Middle Blocker

There remains plenty of intrigue in the race for the Section 4 A title in 2009 after the South Side Beaver Rams continued their recent run of tremendous play as they knocked off the second place Avonworth Antelopes at home 3 games to 0. The scores were 25-17, 25-11 and 25-21. It was South Side Beaver's fifth straight win by bageling their opponent. The Rams feature a young team in 2009 with only one senior getting a lot of playing time, five juniors and one sophomore among their top 7 players. They had a couple of standout performers in this match. Junior, 5'5, Outside Hitter, Brittany Dhayer (whom Avonworth head coach Doug Vandervort had made an adjustment to his defense to try and contain her scoring) played her usual all-around solid game and tallied 7 kills and 4 digs. The South Side Beavers lone senior in the lineup, 5'8" Maria Prezzia, had an impressive performance in this match as she registered a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. The Rams captain, 5'6" Junior, Setter, Allison Frasier dished out 27 assists. However the player who had the biggest influence in the Rams sweep of the Antelopes was 5'9" Junior, Middle Blocker, Kara Bucklen. Kara was a force to be reckoned with both at the front of the net and behind the service line. In game one of this very key matchup, with the score only 5-3, in favor of the Rams, Ms. Bucklen stepped behind the service line and helped her team run off 7 consecutive points to take a commanding 12-3 advantage and South Side Beaver never looked back in taking game one, 25-17. In game two, with the score tied at 2 apiece, Kara once again took her turn at service. She proceeded to spark her team to a run of 10 straight points and a lead of 12 to 2. Kara demonstrated a strong serve and some intimidating hitting at the net that her opponents did not look forward to having to face. Kara contributed 5 kills,1 block and 7 assisted blocks as well. The win puts South Side Beaver head coach Jason Benkowski's team in a position where after an 0-2 start, if things break right for them next week can end up being quite a turnaround. That being a home court win by the Avonworth Antelopes over the OLSH Chargers next Tuesday and then a Rams victory on the road against the OLSH Chargers next Thursday and suddenly there is a 3-way tie for first place in Section 4 A. Indeed, there is a lot of intrigue in this Section with 3 weeks remaining in the regular season. If Kara Bucklen and her mates play as well as they did tonight it would not be wise for anyone to bet against the Rams making that turnaround.

Latrobe Wildcats 3 - Hempfield Spartans 0
Brittany Lhota - Latrobe
6'2" Senior - Middle Hitter

The Latrobe Wildcats completed the first half of Section 1 AAA play with a 6-0 record after a 3 sets to none sweep (25-12, 25-20 and 25-23) of the Hempfield Spartans at home. The Spartans played the Wildcats tough but were not able to run off enough consecutive point runs of 3 or more points (3 times compared to the Wildcats 7) and remained winless in Section play with an 0-4 record. Latrobe has only lost 1 set thus far in regular season section play and look very much like a team that if they can retain their focus, run the table in Section 1 AAA this season. They have a wonderful setter in 5'5" Junior, Kasey Feiertag, who recognizes who their clutch finisher is and gets the ball to her in high percentage scoring territory. At one point in game one of tonight's match with the score 13-12 Latrobe, Latrobe scored 12 consecutive points during her service to help close out game one for the Wildcats. The player who tallied a lot of those points is our Player-of-the-Match and is the second player in the history of our Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program to receive this honor twice, Brittany Lhota. The University of Pittsburgh recruit is a tower of power for head coach Jenny Feiertag's Wildcats. Brittany recorded 12 kills in 26 attempts for a 47% kill ratio, 5 blocks, 3 aces and a hitting percentage near 90%. Already this season she has set the school record for kills in a match with 30 against Laurel Highlands. She plans to major in dentistry at Pitt and wants to become an Orthodontist. She says she likes to keep her teeth straight and wants to put beautiful smiles on the faces of other people. Brittany certainly is putting a lot of smiles on the faces of her teammates this season and frowns on the countenances of her opponents. Congratulations Brittany Lhota on joining Upper St. Clair's Senior, Middle Blocker, Casey Perryman in a very exclusive club in the Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program.

Plum Mustangs 3 – Fox Chapel Foxes 0
Kristy Lagnese – Plum Mustangs
5’7” Senior – Outside Hitter/Right Side Setter

These are good times for the program at Plum. The Mustangs just won the Plum Tournament in their own barn for the fourth year in a row, and they have now won back-to-back matches to stay within one game of unbeaten Penn Hills in Section 4 of Class AAA on the strength of a home-court sweep of the Foxes. Lagnese was one of the Plum seniors who took control of the match early and often with solid execution on both offense and defense. In the first game she provided five digs to set the platter for fellow senior Tara Munzek, who led all players that game with four kills, and after several rallies by Fox Chapel, the Mustangs finally held off the stubborn Foxes for a 25-20 win, and Plum did not look back. Once again, Lagnese’s headstrong play helped her team storm out to leads of 6-0 and 15-6 in game number two en route to a 25-17 decision, and her four kills in the third game helped Plum easily dispatch of Fox Chapel 25-16 to complete the sweep. Lagnese topped her Mustang teammates with nine digs and seven kills, as Plum gets ready for their second meeting with Shaler at home Thursday.

Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions 3 - Geibel Gators 0
Hannah Frankhauser - Greensburg Central Catholic
Senior - Setter

The Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions are a very impressive looking volleyball team. They dispatched the 2008 WPIAL Class A runnersups quite easily at home, winning in 3 quick sets, 25-11, 25-6 and 25-8. They are a team with an array of weapons, size, defense, hitting and athleticism. They play with a great deal of confidence and it's readily apparent that they enjoy playing with one another. Freshmen, Outside Hitter, Shannon Hurley continued her remarkable debut season with frequent displays of hitting power and a deft touch around the net. Senior, Outside Hitter, Samantha Chorney, was all over the court hitting winners and had the most thunderous kill of the night and Junior, Middle Blocker, Jill Lantzy, is an impactful influencer in the middle of the net. However, the player who is the engine on this powerful locomotive is Senior, Setter, Hannah Frankhauser. Hannah transfered to Greensburg Central Catholic from Hempfield for her senior year and has a knack for placing the ball in the best spots for her talented front row teammates to lower the boom! She recorded 30 assists, 10 service points and was 2 for 2 attacking. Third year Centurions head coach Heather Meyer led Greensburg Central Catholic to the WPIAL Class A Finals in 2007. The 2009 edition of the Centurions have all the ingredients on hand to make a return visit to the championship match at Chartiers Valley High School on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

Hopewell Vikings 3- Beaver Bobcats 0
Brittany Lucas- Beaver
Sophomore Outside Hitter

Playing the vaunted Hopewell Vikings on any night is a difficult task, but the Bobcats were on their home court and came into the game thinking it would be their night. It seemed like it might be in the early going of game one. Beaver jumped out to a 7-2 lead and outplayed the Vikings in the early stages of the first game. Strong front line play by Senior Courtney Shallcross, and Sophomore Brittany Lucas gave the Bobcats hope. They led until Hopewell fought back and tied it at 15-15. Hopewell took over the game scoring 10 of the last 14 points to win going away 25-19. Hopewell's Freshman sensation Shatori Kimbrough was a huge difference at the net on defense, and offensively had 3 big kills to pace the Vikings. Game two was a much closer affair, but Beaver led most of the way again going out to a 12-8 lead, but Hopewell again tied it at 15-15 and again the Vikings took over scoring 10 of the last 14 points to win 25-19. Alexis Rains the Libero for the Vikings was a key on defense late in this game and Jamie Barkman the senior outside hitter was a force at the net on offense for Hopewell. In game three Beaver hung in there until 7-7 when the Vikings scored 8 straight points and 18 of the final 25 points to cruise to a 25-14 victory. Despite strong play from Beaver's Tia Mancia on the front line and Kate Woolaway in the setter position it wasn't the Bobcats night after all. Hopewell improves to 5-1 and remains 1/2 game out of first place, Beaver falls to 3-2 and holds onto 3rd place by one game

Upper St. Clair Panthers 3 - Canon McMillan Big Macs 0
Rachel Jones - Upper St. Clair
Junior - Libero/Setter

The Upper St. Clair Panthers remained unbeaten in Section 2 AAA with a 3 sets to none victory on the road over the Canon McMillan Big Macs by scores of 25-12, 27-25 and 25-20. Although the Panthers won in 3 games it was not a walk over against the Big Macs. After losing game one by 13 points the Big Macs had an excellent opportunity to tie the match at 1 set apiece when they broke a 20 all tie to lead 23-20. However a service error by 5'8", sophomore, outside hitter, Anna Lombardo, opened the door and Upper St. Clair walked through it, outscoring Canon McMillan 7 to 2 to win game 2, 27-25. The Panthers won game 3, 25-20, but Canon McMillan head coach Michelle Moeller's team did not just roll over. Trailing 24 to 13, and sparked by the all-around play of their 5'7", junior, setter, Taylor Petras, the Big Macs scored 7 unanswered points (their longest run of points all evening) to close within 24-20, before falling 25-20, for a three straight sets defeat. Upper St. Clair has a host of talented players that head coach Yoko Nagao can rely on and tonight it was no different. Senior, Middle Blocker, Casey Perryman had another solid performance with 9 kills and 2 blocks and senior, setter, Susan McLean rang up 24 assists and 10 digs. However, the player-of-the-match was junior, libero/setter, Rachel Jones. Playing in essentially only the first two sets, Rachel had 22 digs and left a lot of skin on the court in leading the Panthers to victory. When you watch her play on the court it is easy to see just how much her energy helps drive and inspires her teammates. If the name Jones sounds familiar to WPIAL volleyball enthusiasts, her sister Stephanie was a libero and a key member of the 2007 Upper St. Clair Panthers team that won the WPIAL Class AAA title. Stephanie was a 1st team All-WPIAL and All-State performer. If Rachel continues to work as hard as she has been in 2009, she might not be the only member of the Jones family that owns a WPIAL gold medal!

Latrobe Wildcats 3 - Penn-Trafford Warriors 0
Brittany Lhota - Latrobe
6'2 Senior - Outside Hitter

Latrobe took over sole possession of first place in Section 1 on Tuesday defeating Penn Trafford 3 games to none. Scores were 25-22, 25-14 and 25-8. The first game went back and forth before Latrobe would score four of the last 5 points to win the first game. The second and third games Latrobe jumped out to big leads and were never threatened. Leading the way was our player Brittany Lhota. The 6 foot 2 senior could not be stopped all night long. The Pitt recruit maybe missed two shots during the match. Kasey Feiertag led the Wildcats in serving twice scoring at least 9 straight points during the second and third games. Latobe improves to 4-0 section 1 while Penn-Trafford falls to 4-1.

September 22, 2009
Frazier Commodores 3 - Jefferson-Morgan Rockets 1
Amanda Pato - Frazier
5'9 Junior - Outside Hitter/Setter

It was a confrontation for undisputed possession for first place in Class A Section 5 between two unbeatens in week 3 of the 2009 volleyball season as the Frazier Commodores, 3-0 hosted the Jefferson-Morgan Rockets, 3-0. Frazier lost both matches to Jefferson-Morgan in 2008 and if they planned to win their first Section title since 2007 it was important for the Commodores to hold serve in their home Fieldhouse. Thanks to the tremendous all-court play of junior, outside hitter/setter, Amanda Pato, 12th year Frazier head coach Mandy Hartman's team is still on course. Frazier took game one, 25-21 before rallying from a 22-20 deficit in game two to win it , 25-23, and take a huge 2 sets to none lead in the match. The Rockets would not go down without a fight and took game three, 25-13. The Commodores closed out the match with a 25-19, game 4 victory. Pato finished just 2 service points from recording a triple-double. She led her team with excellent play all over the court, playing all 3 front row positions and moving to the back row and coming up with numerous digs. For the night Amanda wound up with 11 kills, 10 assists and 8 service points. Frazier assistant coach Don Hartman called Amanda Pato a "5 tool player who can pass, set, hit, serve and is an outstanding blocker. She is tall at 5'9" and is having a breakout year". After watching Amanda's performance in this match his assessment of Ms. Pato's skills is right on point!

Thomas Jefferson Jaguars 3, Elizabeth Forward Warriors 2
Maura Lyle - Elizabeth Forward - Senior - Outside/Middle Hitter
Catherine Waters - Elizabeth Forward - Sophomore - Middle Hitter

Archrivals Elizabeth Forward and Thomas Jefferson both entered Tuesday night's match without having lost a game, let alone a match, in two Section 5-AA contests, so something had to give on this night. As it turned out, it went the distance, with the Jaguars pulling off the huge road win 3-2 in a series of close ones. The Warriors took the first game 25-22 before the Jags won a marathon game two 35-33. Honorable mention goes to Kayla Horan of Thomas Jefferson, who got the game point in the dramatic second game, and was coming up with big kills all night long. Her squad would parlay the momentum into a 25-21 game three decision, but the home team battled back 25-20 in game four, setting the stage for a hard-fought fifth round which went to the Jaguars 16-14. Elizabeth Forward had more than its share of stellar performances, though, enough to warrant "Co-Players of the Match." Veteran leader Maura Lyle saw her team convert 86 percent of her serves into points while picking up 15 digs on the night. Meanwhile, young star Catherine Waters had an outstanding 15 solo blocks to go with a staggering 27 kills.

Bentworth Bearcats 3 – Bishop Canevin Crusaders 2
Katlyn D’Orazio – Bentworth Bearcats
5’8” Senior – Outside Hitter

The early success of a very young Bearcats team has been one of the most fascinating stories of the 2009 season, but on this night it was one of their only seniors who provided offensive and defensive leadership at crucial times. In a battle of unbeaten Class A heavyweights D’Orazio led Bentworth to a come-from-behind victory that gave it sole possession of first place in Section 6. The ‘Cats won a tumultuous first game that would set the tone for the match by a narrow 26-24 margin before the Crusaders bounced back with a decisive 25-13 win in the second game, and then Canevin took the lead with a 25-19 victory in game number three. Bishop Canevin was creating mismatches with its size up front, but D’Orazio showed great defensive poise in the fourth game, recording five digs to help her team force a decisive fifth game with a 25-19 win. In the final game D’Orazio again ramped up her defensive efforts and made a couple very important kills as Bentworth eked out a 15-13 victory, coming from behind again to do so. She continued her excellent senior season with another double-double, recording 12 digs and 16 kills, including at least three kills in each of the last three games.

Trinity Hillers 3 - Canon-McMillan Big Macs 0
Mary Stadleman - Trinity Hillers
5'11" Senior - Outside Hitter

Trinity entered the Canon-McMillan gymnasium on Wednesday evening as a slight underdog, with the Big Macs starting the season 3-0 while Trinity was 2-1. The Hillers took control early and never looked back, though, storming to 25-16 and 25-17 victories in the first two contests, then hanging on to win a back-and-forth battle in game three 25-21, taking the match 3-0. Both teams were playing with a full deck on this night, with 12 service aces for Canon-McMillan and 13 for Trinity. Four of those went to senior Mary Stadleman of Trinity, who was "aces" all night long with two kills, one block and six sideouts earned to pace her Hillers to a big victory in Section 2-AAA.

September 15, 2009
Baldwin Highlanders 3 - Moon Tigers 0
Jenna Snyder - Baldwin Highlanders
5'10" Junior - Outside Hitter

The Baldwin Highlanders are stocked with senior leadership this season, with 11 of them taking up almost two-thirds of the 2009 varsity roster. Several of those veterans made their presence felt as Baldwin opened Section 5-AAA play at home on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory against defending co-champion Moon, but it was junior Jenna Snyder who really stood out all night long. Moon stormed out to an early lead in game one, but Snyder was all over the court, leading the comeback charge to a 25-17 victory with five attempts, three kills, two blocks and one dig. That helped the Highlanders set the tone, and game two was nearly a mirror image with the Tigers gaining an early lead, but falling 25-14. Game three saw Moon give the home team all it could handle, but thanks to Snyder and company, it was a 25-23 squeaker to close out the night. Over the three games, Snyder had 15 attempts, eight kills, two blocks and three digs.

September 15, 2009
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 3 - South Side Beaver Rams 2
Lauren McDonald - Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Sophomore - Outside Hitter

Going into this match the Chargers had lost their last 4 consecutive matches against the Rams, all of them going to 5 sets. Leading after 3 games 2 sets to1 (by scores of 25-19, 20-25 and 25-12), it looked promising for OLSH to end that losing streak. However, South Side Beaver rallied on their home hard court and scored seven of the first 8 points to take game 4, 25-13, and forced the fifth set deciding short game. The Chargers won a tight, back and forth fifth set by scoring the last 3 points of the game to break a 12-12 tie to edge out the Rams, 15-12. OLSH earned this important early season Section 4 A victory due in large part to the consistently good play of sophomore, outside hitter, Lauren McDonald. She had 9 kills and only 1 error on 24 attempts to go along with 8 digs and 3 service aces. Additionally, Lauren had 13 pluses and only 7 minuses in 20 serve-receive attempts. Thanks to a performance like Lauren's, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is now 3-0 and driving the pace car in the race for the Section 4 A title.

September 10, 2009
West Allegheny Indians 3 - Moon Tigers 1
Korin Wengryn - West Allegheny
Senior - Middle Hitter

Korin Wengryn is the epitome of an emotional team leader for the West Allegheny Indians. The senior MH wears her heart on her sleeve for the rest of her teammates to see and the Indians respond in a big way. Wengryn had a stellar night statistically putting up a "double dozen" if you will for the Indians in a 3-1 win over cross town rival Moon. Thursday night at West Allegheny high school posting 12 blocks and 12 kills on the night. The stats are great and obviously a huge lift for the Indians but even more special might be the lift Wengryn gives her mates after racking up a kill or a block. A special player on a special team and really fun to watch.

September 10, 2009
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers 3 - Avonworth Antelopes 2
Becky Christiansen -Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Senior - 5'6" Middle Hitter

Senior Middle Hitter Becky Christiansen's play just got better the more difficult the match became for the Chargers as they rallied from being down 2 sets to 1 to knock off their Section 4 Class A rivals the Avonworth Antelopes in 5 games, 3-2. OLSH won the first set 25-21 but lost the second and third sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-19. Facing a must win in game 4, the Chargers rallied to win it, 25-20. OLSH took the early lead in the decisive fifth set and went on to win it by a score of 15-9. Becky Christiansen had 14 kills and 8 digs in the match. She came through big in the clutch as Becky had 9 perfect receives in 10 attempts, mostly in the deciding games 4 and 5. Her head coach, Mike McDonald, said that a serve-receive percentage that high is very rare for a player to accomplish. Becky certainly saved her best game for when the Chargers really needed it in this hard fought match.

Blackhawk Cougars 3 - BEAVER BOBCATS 0
Kayla Schaughency - Beaver
Junior - Libero

Junior Libero Kayla Schaughency just kept on keeping on in the Bobcats big season opening Section 1 Class AA match against the visiting Blackhawk Cougars. Despite losing in 3 sets to Blackhawk by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-12, the player whom Beaver head coach Charlene Horwatt describes as one of her best and most dependable performers, Kayla finished the night with 8 digs and 2 aces and left a lot of skin on the hard court. However, her inspired effort was not enough to defeat a more experienced and taller Blackhawk team. Congratulations Kayla on giving your all and providing solid leadership to your Beaver Bobcat teammates.

Terrific 21 Class AAA Girls Volleyball Weekly Honor Roll
Tara Gorndt - 5'6" - Senior - Outside Hitter - Moon

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
CHELSEA KATKICH - WEST ALLEGHENY INDIANS
Senior - Outside Hitter

Last season the West Allegheny Indians finished in first place in Section 3 AA with a 9-1 record before going on to win the WPIAL Class AA Title with a heart-pounding 5 set victory over the Hopewell Vikings at Chartiers Valley
High School. When they were ranked #2 in the state among Class AA girls volleyball teams by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings earlier this season the South Fayette Lions upset them at home on September
29th (2-3) and dropped them to the #4 spot and the Lions moved past the Indians and took over their #2 position among Pennsylvania's best Class AA girls teams. West Allegheny head coach Lisa Pyrdek's squad had rolled over
their next 4 section opponents in short order by scores of 3 games to zero and were looking forward to their rematch at South Fayette last Tuesday in the regular season section match finale for both teams. To paraphrase the words from Bachmen Turner Overdrive, the Indians took care of business in the rematch winning in three straight sets, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-19. As a result West Allegheny will share the Section 3 AA section championship with South Fayette in 2009 with a 9-1 record. This week's Terrific 21 Class AA
Player-Of-The-Week is West Allegheny, Senior, Outside Hitter, #27, Chelsea Katkich. Chelsea led the victory over South Fayette with (4) aces, (10) kills and (5) blocks. Coach Pyrdek said " with her aggressive serves, she was able to throw South Fayette out of their offensive strategies". As a senior, Chelsea has become a leader on the court. She is a returning letterman from last year and she knows how to handle pressure situations and she was a reliable player for the Indians versus South Fayette. Pressure is something that West Allegheny has proven they
will not succumb to when the stakes are at their highest. Ms. Katkich becomes the fourth West Allegheny player to receive T-21 P-O-T-W honors in the history of our program joining Kristen Lang (2008) and Korin Wengryn and Alexa Seybold (earlier this season). Kudos to Chelsea on continuing the excellent play as a member of one of the best Class AA girls volleyball programs in western Pennsylvania.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
LAUREN MAYERNIK - AVONWORTH ANTELOPES
Sophomore - Middle Hitter

2009 has been a real good season for Avonworth head coach Doug Vandervort's Antelopes. After finishing in third place in Section 4 A last year with an 8-4 mark, they wrapped up the 2009 season in a three-way tie for first with
the South Side Beaver Rams and the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers with a 10-2 record. They do not have a senior among their top 7 players (6 sophomores and 1 junior) and this season may only be a prelude to something
really special in 2010! The Antelopes defeated section foe Aliquippa, 3-0, on Tuesday night to conclude the Section 4 A portion of their regular season and did so in tremendous fashion in winning each of their last 5 section matches by identical 3 sets to 0 scores. Avonworth concluded regular season match play be knocking off the unbeaten Section 3 A (12-0) and the defending WPIAL Class A Champion Beaver County Christian School Eagles, in a dramatic thriller on Thursday, rallying from a 2 games to 1 deficit, 3-2, by scores of 17-25, 27-25, 17-25, 25-20 and 15-12. This week's Terrific 21 Class A Player-Of-The-Week is the Antelopes outstanding Middle Hitter, Sophomore, Lauren Mayernik. Mayernik led the team in kills this week and throughout much of the season. Coach Vandervort said that Lauren had more than (40) kills combined in the two matches this week. Against Beaver County Christian , he moved her to the power side and she responded with an incredible match. The Antelopes had been having difficulty getting Ms.
Mayernik enough sets in the middle. Lauren also leads Avonworth in blocks, averaging at least 10 blocks per match. Lauren was a starter as a freshmen and is an outstanding player in both volleyball, as well as basketball. Additionally, Lauren is one of the 18 members of the Avonworth girls volleyball team that have an overall GPA of 3.0 and above. Mayernik is quite the package as a student-athlete and WPIAL coaches take note, Lauren will be providing headaches for you for 2 more seasons. Congratulations Lauren on earning this week's T-21 Class A P-O-T-W.

WEEK of 10/12/09:

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
KELLY SAWL - BALDWIN HIGHLANDERS
Junior - Right Side Hitter

The Baldwin Highlanders under their first year head coach and former Highlanders player Brandi Sroka have played well this season. After finishing in third place last year in Section 5 AAA with a 6-4 record, they enter the last week of the regular season already having a 6-3 record and a likely 7-3 final section mark and in a tie with the Moon Tigers for second place. One of the reasons for this rise in the standings has ben the performance of Junior, Right Side Hitter, Kelly Sawl. Coach Sroka said " if there is one word to describe Kelly Sawl's playing, it would be solid. Kelly Sawl has been a key contributor to Baldwin's volleyball's success this year due to her consistency and positive attitude". Kelly paced the Highlanders offense last week with a .3125 hitting percentage adding 10 digs
and a block. On Tuesday, against the unbeaten Section 5 AAA leader and the state's top ranked AAA girls volleyball team, the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils, Sawl collected 7 kills with only one error. Kelly is considering continuing her volleyball and academic career in college. Congratulations Kelly in leading the Highlanders week in and week out!

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
ALEXA SEYBOLD - WEST ALLEGHENY INDIANS
Senior - Libero

The West Allegheny Indians had a remarkable year in 2008. They finished in first place in Section 3 AA with a mark of 9-1 and went on to win the WPIAL Class AA Title. They started off this year as the highest ranked WPIAL Class AA team (#2 in the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Top Ten Poll) until a 3 sets to 2 upset loss at home to South Fayette on September 29th spoiled their party. Since that tough defeat, the Indians (8-1) have won all 4 of their section matches by scores of 3-0 to set the stage for
them to earn a share of the Section 3 AA championship on Tuesday when they make the short trip to face their rivals, the South Fayette Lions (9-0). They knocked off the Quaker Valley Quakers last Tuesday, 3-0 and did the same thing by an identical score to the Montour Spartans. Our Class AA
Player-Of-The-Week is the Indians Senior, Libero, Alexa Seybold. Alexa is one of the six seniors on West Allegheny who have been helping their team try to duplicate the Indians success from a season ago. Last week she had
37 digs and 4 aces. West Allegheny head coach Lisa Pyrdek said, "Unfortunately, the stats do not always portray the true impact a defensive player can have. Alexa served 24 times over the 2 games, which just goes to show how aggressive her serve can be". Alexa also averaged a passer rating of 2.47 (best is 3). Ms. Seybold is a high honor student as well as a former MSA Sports Network Elite Eight Girls Volleyball P-O-T-W from last season. She has lettered 3 years in volleyball and softball and Alexa's future plans include attending a 6 year Pharmacy School, hopefully either at Duquesne or Pitt. She says that her favorite volleyball moment or memory is winning WPIALS in 2008 and that people would be surprised to know that she is proud to share the court with her sister, Sophomore, Outside Hitter,
Morgan. Kudos to Alexa Seybold on being chosen the Terrific 21 Class AA Girls Volleyball Program's P-O-T-W for the second time in her career.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
DANA HEIDENREICH - BISHOP CANEVIN CRUSADERS
5'10" - Junior - Middle Hitter

When one talks to opposing coaches about the Section 6 A Bishop Canevin Crusaders the first name that comes off their lips is their standout, Senior Outside Hitter, Katelyn Blaich and her praise is well-deserved as she consistently brings the thunder with her powerful right arm. However, there is another influential front row performer who Crusaders opponents have to honor and she is our Terrific 21 Class A Girls Volleyball Program Class A
Player-Of-The-Week, Junior, 5'10", Middle Hitter, Dana Heidenreich. Bishop Canevin went 3 and 0 this week with victories over Avella last Tuesday, 3-0 and Burgettstown on Saturday, 3-1 and perhaps their biggest win since the 1999 season, a 3 sets to 2 comeback win over the Bentworth Bearcats at home on Thursday. Ms. Heidenreich contributed quite significantly to the Crusaders comeback from a 2 games to 0 deficit as she finished with an exceptional hitting night with 15 kills with 0 errors and a hitting percentage of .405%, (4) solo blocks and (6) blocking assists. Her totals for the week are (30) kills with a .366 hitting percentage, (13) solo blocks (7) blocking assists for a blocking percentage of .800%. Speaking of
honoring, Dana has a GPA above 3.0 and is a three sport athlete at Bishop Canevin. Dana Heidenreich joins her teammate Katelyn Blaich who received the T-21 Class A P-O-T-W for week 1 as the second Crusader to receive this recognition. If you think you can feel Bishop Canevin head coach Kevin Walters smiling as you read this, you are right. He has Dana returning next year along with (5) other talented underclassmen on a Bishop Canevin program that has a future so bright, don't be surprised if the next time you run across coach Walters he is wearing his shades!

WEEK of 10/5/09:

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYERS-OF-THE WEEK
CASEY PATTYN - MOON LADY TIGERS
5'7" Senior - Setter
MADDIE FECKO - MOON LADY TIGERS
5'9" Senior - Libero

This week the Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program has
Co-Players-Of-the-Week in Class AAA and it is most appropriate that we do so as these two outstanding athletes and great character people go together like Haylie and Hilary Duff or how about the Olsen twins Mary Kate and
Ashley? Needless to say that wherever you find one of these players handling the volleyball on the court the ball will soon end up on the hands of the other. This dynamic duo is # 20, 5'7" Senior, Setter, Casey Pattyn and #2, 5'9" Senior, Libero, Rebekah "Maddie" Fecko. The Moon Tigers
currently are tied for second place in Section 5 AAA with the Baldwin Highlanders with a 5-2 record in no small measure due to the scintillating play of these two Lady Tigers. Casey Pattyn had 49 assists, 4 kills and 2
blocks and Maddie Fecko 41 digs and 3 aces as both seniors helped lead the Moon Tigers to a big 3-1 victory over section rival Baldwin. Casey followed up that performance with 36 assists and 3 blocks and Maddie had 34 digs and
4 aces in a key section win 3-0 over Bethel Park to secure for Moon it's sixth straight playoff appearance. Casey and Maddie also showed great leadership and character in organizing a "Dig for the Cure" event that raised over $3,600.00 for breast cancer research and had a huge impact on raising awareness of this disease and the need for early detection in the community. For Casey this is the second time this season that she has been selected as the T-21 Class AAA P-O-T-W and the first time for Maddie Fecko.
They are the fourth and fifth players from the Moon Lady Tigers to be chosen the Class AAA P-O-T-W in the history of our program. The other three Moon Lady Tigers to be honored are Ashley Buse, Alyssa Hall and Layne Baggett all
2008 selectees. These two student-athletes are both very personable and a joy to interview. Maddie's favorite volleyball moment is the WPIAL'S and pre-game jam sessions with Casey. Casey says her favorite activity to do in
her free time is to color by number with Maddie. So, you see it's quite difficult to separate these two.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
AMY O'KEEFE - SETON-LASALLE LADY REBELS
5'10" Junior - Setter

The 2009 season has proven to be a challenging one for the third place Seton-LaSalle Lady Rebels (6-3). After finishing the 2008 season in a first place tie with the Mars Planets with an 11-1 Section 2 AA record they find themselves as we head into week 6 of this season in a battle to insure that they qualify for the WPIAL Class AA playoffs in 2009. One player who has certainly been doing her part to continue the Lady Rebels run of success is
our choice for this week's Terrific 21 Class AA Player-Of-The-Week. She is #42, Junior, Setter and team co-captain, Amy O'Keefe. Seton-LaSalle head coach Mark Felbinger said that "Amy has been setting consistently throughout the season and is an integral part to the team and their success". The Lady Rebels went 1-1 in section play last week and O'Keefe's setting was nothing short of superb. The 5"10" O'Keefe is an excellent blocker and is one of
their most consistent servers. This is Amy's second year starting on the varsity and she has matured into a true leader. She is the quarterback of her team and knows how to get the most out of their hitters. She always gives them an opportunity to get a kill. Coach Felbinger is not finished yet in singing Ms. O'Keefe's praises saying " Amy speed and quickness on the court has kept many plays alive. Her tenacity, skill, work ethic and determination has set the standard for the other setters in our program."
Amy talents do not end on the volleyball court. She is also a very talented basketball and lacrosse player for Seton-LaSalle. She is a tremendously gifted athlete. She uses her height, strength and knowledge of the game while she is out there on the court. As the Rebels gear up for a playoff run, it will be under the leadership and sets of Amy. Seton-LaSalle hosts the second place Knoch Knights (7-1) on Tuesday night after having lost to them in the first half of section play before facing the fourth place
Ambridge Bridgers (4-5) at home on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. One gets the feeling that if this week's T-21 Class AA P-O-T-W Amy O'Keefe has any say in the matter, the Lady Rebels name will be included among the teams being announced as playoff participants in 2009. Amy becomes the third Seton-LaSalle Lady Rebels player chosen for Class AA P-O-T-W honors this season and the fourth in the history of our program. The others being Annie Rodgers and Alana Liggett this season and Ali Nicola last year.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
JESSICA DORAZIO - BENTWORTH BEARCATS
5'4" Sophomore - Setter/Right Side

The Bentworth Bearcats had a busy week of matches last week playing 3 matches in 4 days and began by dropping the first match on Monday to a very good fellow Terrific 21 member and senior-laden Jefferson-Morgan Rockets team. The 3 sets to 1 loss for the Bearcats was just their second in the
regular season in the last 5 seasons, and the first to a Single A team. One bright spot in the loss for the Bearcats was the emergence of their athletic Setter/Right Side, #4, Jessica Dorazio who would post a triple-double and
then follow it up with two double-doubles to complete the hat trick for the week. In the match against Jefferson-Morgan, Jessica recorded 13 kills with just one hitting error (.420 hitting efficiency), 12 assists, 3 service aces
and 12 digs. That indeed is a very impressive evening on the hard court! One day later deciding not to rest on her laurels, in a 3-1 win over the Carlynton Cougars, Jessica finished the match with 8 kills, 14 assists, 4 service aces and 18 digs. Two days later the Bearcats traveled to face the Fort Cherry Rangers and squared off against a Fort Cherry team determined in front of their large and raucous crowd to knock Bentworth off. In the Bearcats 3-2 victory, Jessica continued her outstanding week of stellar play by recording 9 kills, 11 assists, 3 service aces and 12 digs. Bearcats head coach Greg Spridik said "the dramatic emergence of this talented younger player in the latter part of the season has energized our team and given them great confidence for the remainder of the season". Ms. Dorazio is also a high honor student and also plays on the basketball and softball teams. Jessica is the second sophomore member of the Bentworth team and third Bearcats player to be selected a P-O-T-W this season (Rachel Spridik
was the first sophomore and senior, Katlyn D'Orazio were the others) and her tremendous play comes at a very good time for the Bearcats. This Thursday they play on the road against the Bishop Canevin Crusaders in a match that will determine how first place will be decided in Section 6 A. At home in their first match against Bishop Canevin, the Bearcats rallied from a 2 sets to 1 deficit to defeat the Crusaders, 3 games to 2 and were forced to rally after trailing in the dramatic short game, 15-13. Bentworth will need a similar performance from Jessica and her other Terrific 21 P-O-T-W teammates if they are to finish alone at the top in Section 6 A this season.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
TORY STORINO - BALDWIN HIGHLANDERS
Senior - Outside Hitter/Right Side

The Baldwin Highlanders continue to be one of the most pleasant stories among our Terrific 21 girls volleyball teams in 2009. After finishing in third place last season with a 6-4 mark in Section 5 AAA they continue to improve under their first year head coach Brandi Sroka. This week's Class AAA Player-Of-The-Week has been through it all and has contributed a lot to their success this season. She is Senior, Outside Hitter, Tory Storino. Tory led the Baldwin Highlanders last week to a 2-0 week including a 3-0 section victory at West Mifflin. Ms. Storino totaled 30 kills and a .328 attack percentage. Her serve percentage was "not too shabby" at .987% with 7 aces. On Saturday at the Moon Tournament Storino collected 34 digs. Tory is considering continuing her volleyball and academic career in college and is currently looking at universities. The Highlanders currently are 4-1 and sit in second place in Section 5 AAA, 1 game behind the section leader Mount Lebanon and one game ahead of third place Moon. They face the Moon Tigers on the road this Tuesday night. In their 4 section wins Baldwin has lost only 1 set. Tory is the second Baldwin Highlanders player to be selected the Class AAA P-O-T-W (Jenna Snyder received the award for week 2 this season). Congratulations Tory in leading the Highlanders to such a fine week!

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
ANNIE RODGERS - SETON LASALLE LADY REBELS
5'10" Sophomore - Middle Hitter

Coaches often tell their backup players to always be ready to play because they never know just when their number is going to be called. This week Seton LaSalle head coach Mark Felbinger did just that with our Terrific 21 Class AA Player-Of-The Week with Sophomore Middle Hitter, #7, Annie Rodgers. Last season the Lady Rebels finished in a first place tie in Section 2 AA with the Mars Planets with 11-1 records. They went into this week trailing the Planets by 2 games in the loss column and could not afford to fall any further behind with the second half of section play about to get underway. With starter Bridget Deasey out with an illness and unable to play, coach Felbinger called on Annie to make her first career varsity start. She rose to the occasion and played incredibly well and the Rebels did not miss a beat defeating AAA opponent New Castle and Section 2 AA foe, Freedom, 3-1. Ms. Rodgers had an over 50% kill percentage when she played against Freedom. Coach Felbinger said " it was a break out game for her and she led the team in kills. This is the best that Annie has ever played and that she played like someone who had been playing varsity a lot longer than a year". The Rebels now have a 5-2 record and face the first place Mars Planets this Tuesday night still with a chance to perhaps earn a share of first place in their section in 2009. Congratulations Annie on your being selected this week's Class AA Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program Player-Of-The-Week. She becomes the third Seton LaSalle player to receive this honor in the history of our program joining Ali Nicola in Week 7 in 2008 and Alana Liggett in Week 1 this year.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYERS-OF-THE WEEK
JESSICA WILSON - FRAZIER COMMODORES
Senior - Libero

The Libero position is a position that does not lend itself to compiling a lot of impressive statistics like the players who perform in the front row but that does not make it any less important to the overall success of a team. Our first of two Class A Co-Players-Of-The-Week plays this position like Israeli-American violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman plays the violin. The Frazier Commodores are unbeaten at 7-0, have lost only 2 sets in regular season match play and are in first place in Section 5 A. Head coach Mandy Hartman's team currently is ranked # 6 in our MSA Sports Network Class A Girls Volleyball Top Ten Poll. A major part of their success can be attributed to the dynamic play of Senior, Libero, # 34, Jessica Wilson. Jessica had a tremendous week for the Commodores in two section victories over California, 3-0 and Geibel, 3-1 and performed outstanding in both. Against California her service percentage was 90% and she had a passer rating of 2.4. Then against the defending Section Champion Geibel Gators whom the Commodores defeated for the second time this season, Jessica's service percentage was 100% with a passer rating of 2.3! Coach Hartman said " Jessica leads this team by example. She has been a consistent and reliable player for us in every match this season. She consistently gives our offense opportunities to score points." On the subject of the role of the libero sometimes being overlooked, coach Hartman said " Unfortunately, it is not a position that receives a lot of accolades and praise. However, I know our players at Frazier appreciate and respect the job that Jessica does for us". In the off-season, Jessica is a member of the Perryopolis Volleyball Club. She was also honored by the Fayette County Coaches Association and placed on their All-County Team each of the last 2 seasons. Last year, she was an All-Section player in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Kudos and plaudits to Jessica Wilson on being chosen the first Frazier Commodores player ever as a Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Player-Of-The-Week.

SAMANTHA CHORNEY - GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC CENTURIONS
Senior - Outside Hitter

When you watch the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions play one of the first aspects about their team that draws your attention is the excellent all-around performance of this week's other Class A Co-Player-Of-The-Week, Senior, Outside Hitter, Samantha Chorney. Samantha is Centurions head coach Heather Meyer's daughter but she is on the hard court because she is a very talented player and leader on this team. Greensburg Central Catholic is 6-0 in Section 1 A and the #1 ranked Class A Girls volleyball team in the current MSA Sports Network Class A Top Ten Poll. Furthermore, the Centurions are sitting in the 9th spot in this week's Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings (the highest ranked and the only top 10 ranked Class A team from the WPIAL in this week's state rankings). Samantha has a lot to do with the success that the Centurions are enjoying this season. She led her team to a pair of non-section victories last week and one Section 1 A win. In their biggest match of the week, Greensburg Central Catholic beat undefeated Class AA Indiana 25-23, 25-17 and 25-23. Samantha had 17 kills and led the defense with 16 digs against Indiana. Ms. Chorney maintains a hitting percentage of 41%. She leads the Centurions defense in digs per game. So, there is no doubt about her willingness to leave some skin on the court. Samantha is a three-year starter for Greensburg Central Catholic and a two-year captain. She was an All-WPIAL selection in 2008. Indeed, if you do not know who the player wearing # 3 is when you enter the gymnasium, you certainly will know who she is before you leave it. Last season the Centurions playoff run ended in the quarterfinals with a 3 sets to 0 loss to the eventual WPIAL Class A champions Beaver County Christian. In 2009 Greensburg Central Catholic has the experience, talent and determination to make it to Chartiers Valley High School on Saturday, November 7, 2009. In case you are not aware, that is the site of the 2009 WPIAL Volleyball Championships. Should they get there, Samantha Chorney will be front and center.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
KORIN WENGRYN - WEST ALLEGHENY INDIANS
SENIOR - MIDDLE BLOCKER

Last year Korin Wengryn was a very good player on a team that had a pair of senior standout players (Michelle Walker and Kristen Lang) yet she was good enough to be chosen as 1st Team All WPIAL and All Section in 2008 as well as selected to the All State Team and a key member on an
Indians team that won the WPIAL Class AA Title. You often hear the term in sports of a team playing with one heartbeat. Korin Wengryn is the heart and soul of the 2009 West Allegheny Indians girls volleyball team. The Indians goal in 2009 is to defend their WPIAL Championship and the team's motto this year is " Nobody can get there unless
Everybody gets there". If that is to happen, Korin Wengryn, this week's Class AA Player-Of-The-Week will be front and center in leading the charge. Last week in two Section 3 AA road victories over Quaker Valley, 3-1 and
Montour, 3-1, Ms. Wengryn played her usual stellar game. She had a total of 30 kills and 15 blocks. Her head coach Lisa Pyrdek says " her enthusiasm and energy surge us through rough patches when she comes onto the court.
She is a senior captain and her leadership is well perceived by her teammates". West Allegheny is 4-0 in Section competition and 5-0 overall in regular season matches. The Indians currently are ranked #1 in the most
recent 2009 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Top Ten Girls Class AA Poll. Korin has already been chosen once this season as the MSA Sports Terrific 21 Player-Of-The Match when she recorded 12 blocks and 12 kills in a 3 sets to 1 victory over the Class AAA Moon Tigers on September 10, 2009. People would be surprised to know that Korin has been able to perform at such a very high level while playing with a torn rotator cuff for the past 2
years! Her future plans include playing volleyball in college and majoring in physical therapy. In addition to being such a dominating player, Korin is just as much a joy to talk with. Korin becomes the second West Allegheny
player ever to receive Player-Of-The Week honors.
The first Indian recipient was Kristen Lang in Week 6 of the 2008 season. Congratulations Korin on being selected this week's Class AA Player-Of-The-Week.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK
SHANNON HURLEY - GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC CENTURIONS
5'11" FRESHMEN - OUTSIDE HITTER

This week's selection of the Class A Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Player-Of-The-Week is a first in the young history of our program. Shannon Hurley of the Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions becomes our first ever freshmen to be awarded this honor. She is having the kind of impact that says to high school volleyball aficionados, take note. Her head coach, Heather Meyer, said " Shannon Hurley had another great week as she helped lead GCC to two sections wins and the Westmoreland County Coaches
Association tournament title." The Centurions are 4-0 in Section 1 A and have only lost 1 set in 4 section matches all season. Last week against some of the best Class A volleyball competition not just in terms of the WPIAL but statewide as well they took care of business. Against the West Shamokin Wolves who finished in a first place tie with Greensburg Central Catholic in 2008 with 10-2 records, they rallied after losing the first set, 18-25 to win three straight games by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-13. This
was definitely a statement victory for the Centurions as they did this against a West Shamokin team that was ranked #7 in the 2009 Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Top Ten Class A Poll and considered by many to be the favorite to win the WPIAL Class A title in 2009. Shannon had 20 kills against section rival West Shamokin and her kill percentage for this game was 51%. She followed that performance up by adding 7 more kills with a kill percentage of 41% in a 3 games to 0 win over the Leechburg Blue Devils. Shannon was also the second leading passer in this game. She is already showing a varied skill set as a freshmen in her first year as a member of the varsity. For good measure, Shannon led the attack again as the Centurions captured their second tournament title on Saturday. This one coming just one week after they won their first ever tournament title in school history last week when they brought home the Derry Area Tournament
Championship. That was impressive as the field included quality Class AAA teams such as Latrobe, Penn Hills and Penn-Trafford and Class AA schools Elizabeth-Forward and Indiana. Kudos to Shannon Hurley on having such an
impressive debut season as both a member of the Greensburg Central Catholic team and as part of the Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program.

The Baldwin Highlanders are off to a very good start in 2009 under their first-year head coach Brandi Sroka. The Highlanders are a senior dominated team but it has been a junior who has set the pace for Baldwin (2-0 and tied for first place in Section 5 AAA with Mount Lebanon). Jenna Snyder led the offense last week totaling 22 kills and a .421 attack percentage in the two victories, 3-0 over Moon and 3-1 against Chartiers Valley. Jenna also contributed 3 blocks and 5 digs as well as a perfect serve percentage with 2 aces. Last Tuesday versus the Moon Tigers Jenna was selected the Player-of-the-Match for her dominating performance on the court. Congratulations Jenna in leading the Highlanders to such a great start!

KATLYN D'ORAZIO - BENTWORTH BEARCATS
5'8" SENIOR - OUTSIDE HITTER

The Bentworth Bearcats under the direction of head coach Greg Spridik have what is called a program down in Bentleyville, PA. The names change but the on court success just keeps rolling along. They are off to a 4-0 start in 2009 and won both matches this week by 3-0 scores over Fort Cherry and Chartiers-Houston. One of this season's big names is Bearcats senior, outside hitter, Katlyn D'Orazio who had a stellar week. She earned a
double-double against Fort Cherry by recording 13 kills (.460 hitting efficiency), 2 blocks, 1 service ace and 15 digs, and a passer rating of 233. Against Chartiers-Houston Katlyn had 9 kills (.333 hitting efficiency),
4 digs, and a passer rating of 2.83. Katlyn currently leads her team in the passer rating category, where a passer rating of 2.1 is considered excellent at the high school level. Ms. D'Orazio is the Treasurer of the Student
Council, Member of the Leo Club, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society and has been a high-honor student throughout high school. She presently ranks in the top-two of her senior class. Kudos and plaudits to Katlyn for representing the ideals of being a student-athlete so
very well!

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS AAA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:
RACHEL JONES - UPPER ST. CLAIR PANTHERS
Junior - Libero/Setter

The defending Section 2 Class AAA co-section champion Upper St. Clair Panthers began the 2009 season perfectly as they went 2-0 in section matches defeating Albert Gallatin, 3-0 and Trinity, 3-1. They then went on to win the tournament that they hosted beating Bishop Canevin, Oakland Catholic and Baldwin on the way to taking the title. The player who had the greatest impact in the Panthers success this week was junior, libero/setter, Rachel Jones. In the two section victories this week Rachel tallied 8 service aces and a whopping 44 digs. Upper St. Clair head coach Yoko Nagao said that Rachel Jones was the MVP of our tournament since they had to play it without their regular setter, Susan McLean. Rachel moved over from her libero spot and set for her team and not only performed well setting and serving but also did play fantastic defense all day long. Coach Nagao added "her play was one of the reasons we won the tournament. She was a surprise for the other coaches". Congratulations Rachel on your outstanding play this week and for being such a versatile player for the Panthers.

CASEY PATTYN - MOON TIGERS
5'7" SENIOR - SETTER

The Moon Tigers finished the 2008 season as Section 5 Class AAA co-section champions with the Mount Lebanon Blue Devils.
They lost to graduation 6 very talented seniors from last year's team led by Ashley Buse (starting as a freshmen at Duquesne University). The Tigers started the 2009 season by going 1-1 in two matches against Class AA competition. They knocked off South Fayette. 3-1 and lost on the road to the defending Class AA WPIAL Champion West Allegheny Indians, 3-1. However, the Tigers appeared to have righted their ship by winning the 28 team MAC tournament . Defeating those same West Allegheny Indians in the championship match, 2-0! One of this year's seniors who has stepped up her game in 2009 is Casey Pattyn. Casey registered 40 assists in the two regular matches against South Fayette and West Allegheny. Ms. Pattyn really shined in the MAC Tournament. She recorded 108 assists, 4 blocks, 6 kills and 12 aces. Moon head coach Jason Ferri said " after a slow start for our team this week as we were trying to find our identity as a team, Casey and our other seniors provided unselfishness, leadership and character enabling our team to significantly raise it's level of play in going undefeated and capturing the MAC title". This year's MAC title was Moon's second MAC title ever. With performances like this one by Casey Pattyn it would be a mistake on the part of Tigers opponents to expect a big drop off by Moon in 2009.

ALANA LIGGETT - SETON-LaSALLE REBELS
5'8" Junior - Outside Hitter

This week's Terrific 21 Class AA Girls Volleyball Player-of-the-Week is the Seton LaSalle Lady Rebels Alana Liggett. The defending section 2 AA Co-Champions began the 2009 season with a 1-1 section start. The Rebels defeated Freedom at home, 3-1 and then lost on the road against the squad they shared the section title with last season, Mars, 3-0. Alana had 2 aces, 4 blocks, 12 kills and 34 digs. Her head coach Mark Felbinger said that Alana hit well in both matches this week.

TERRIFIC 21 CLASS A GIRLS VOLLEYBALL CO-PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK:
RACHEL SPRIDIK - BENTWORTH BEARCATS
5' 4" Sophomore - Setter/Right Side

Most of us are familiar with the adage, youth must be served. However, that long-time expression is being rewritten when it come to the girls volleyball team at Bentworth High School. Rachel was selected first team WPIAL All-Section as a freshmen last season. The Bearcats won their first two section matches of the 2009 campaign by defeating Burgettstown and Carlynton each by the score of 3-0. Leading her team in both kills (21, with a .540 hitting efficiency) and sets assists (34) Rachel Spridik earned a triple-double in both matches this past week. For good measure, she contributed 22 digs in the first two matches (11 in each match). Also, this past week, Rachel was the only volleyball player named in the Washington Observer-Reporter's on-line sports blog as one of the 10 athletes from Olympic sports to watch in the Washington/Greene county area this season. This talented student-athlete began her volleyball training at the age of 5 and is also a member of the Pittsburgh Magic VBC. The Bearcats extended their section winning streak to 50 consecutive matches with their two wins and the outlook for their season appears very bright indeed with performances like this from sensational sophomore Rachel Spridik.

KATELYN BLAICH - BISHOP CANEVIN CRUSADERS
Senior - Outside Hitter

Last season the Crusaders finished in second place in Section 6 A behind the Bentworth Bearcats. If they plan to unseat Bentworth in 2009 they will need performances like the one that they received this past week from Katelyn Blaich. Bishop Canevin head coach, Kevin Walters said that Katelyn played outstandingly both offensively and defensively in three matches that included 3-0 wins over section foes Fort Cherry and Chartiers-Houston. Katelyn's numbers included 4 service aces, 21 digs, 41 kills with a hitting percentage of .526, 1 solo block, 1 block assist and a blocking percentage of .667. She was quite the stat sheet stuffer for the Crusaders last week! While maintaining a 3.0 plus GPA and playing volleyball, Katelyn finds the time to be involved in Student Council, FBLA, Crusaders for Life and the service group - Interact. Katelyn captains the Bishop Canevin volleyball team and is a three-year letter winner. Her plans are to continue to play volleyball while studying nursing in college.

24 of the top players in the Terrific 21 Girls Volleyball Program attended the Second Annual "First Serve" meeting for the participating schools in this unique program that was held at Moon Area Senior High School on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. In what is believed to be a first in Western Pennsylvania high school athletics, the attendees at this gathering included student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors, booster club sponsors and interested parents. In another first for this groundbreaking program on the MSA Sports Network one student-athlete from each member school spoke on the expectations for her team this year and what playing the sport has done for their personal development. This added a different perspective to what is typically discussed during pre-season sports kickoff meetings. The players felt honored to have been selected by their coaches to represent their teams and to have been able to take an active part in the proceedings.
