Peters Twp and Shady Side Academy Capture WPIAL Field Hockey Gold
11/2/2009 - Don Rebel
One school is celebrating a record tying tenth WPIAL girls field hockey championship while another school is reveling in their first ever district crown. Monday night at Fox Chapel High School, both Shady Side Academy in Class AA and Peters Township in Class AAA took home the gold after a pair of overtime victories.
Thanks to Lee Mohn and Justin McKim for these title match recaps.
WPIAL CLASS AAA CHAMPIONSHIP: Peters Township Indians 1 - Fox Chapel Foxes 0 in Overtime Peters Township traveled to Fox Chapel to play the Foxes on there home field for the AAA Field Hockey championship on Monday night. The Indians came away with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory. The first 10 to 15 minutes Fox Chapel had the advantage but they were unable to convert on any of the 5 corners they had Peters Township would then control most of the game registering unofficially 11 shots on goal to the Foxes 0. Fox Chapel's Madison Wagner was amazing at times. In the overtime Peters Township finally figured out Wagner when Julianne Femiani deflected a shot past Wagner with a little less then 2 minutes left in the overtime to give the Indians the victory. Juliana Mackrinos and Julianne Femiani were almost unstoppable in the overtime creating numerous chances. Peters Township will now concentrate on the state playoffs starting next week.
WPIAL CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIP: Shady Side Academy Indians 2 - Ellis School Tigers 1 in Overtime History did not repeat itself in the Class AA WPIAL girls’ field hockey championship Monday night at Fox Chapel High School. Led by junior Gina Cunningham’s goal one minute, 18 seconds into overtime, Shady Side Academy captured WPIAL gold for the 10th time in school history with a dramatic 2-1 victory over rival Ellis School. The victory for the Indians avenged last year’s overtime loss in the title game against the Tigers and was the fourth crown in the past five years for SSA. Shady Side Academy scored first with six minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the first half off senior Karen Dawson’s eighth goal of the season. Ellis School tied the contest with six minutes, 15 seconds remaining in regulation on a goal by senior Emily Russell. In overtime, Cunningham’s fifth goal of the season punctuated a game that actually saw both defenses dominate. Indians’ winning goalie Erin Gorse, a sophomore, saved 10 shots.
