Saturday's Scholastic Starz - Week 9
11/1/2009 - Don Rebel

To the winners on the final Saturday of the WPIAL football season went their favorite candy bar - biggie size. To the losers went an open, stale popcorn ball. Such was the case as the final day of the regular season came to an end on Halloween. Here are the athletes who performed to a lvel that was a real treat for all who watched.

Jeff Davis - South Fayette

South Fayette had already clinched the Class AA Century Conference championship, but Jeff Davis helped provide the cherry of an undefeated regular season op top of the whipped creme which was on top ofthe icing which was on top of the cake. Davis rushed for 183 yards and scored four touchdowns on runs of 54, 4, 8 and another 8-yard scamper to lead the Lions to a 9-0 record with a 35-15 victory over the host Bishop Canevin Crusaders.

Alex Isenberg - Freeport

While Freeport will have to settle for the number-two seed out of the Class AA Allegheny Conference due to the head-to-head tiebreaker with Shady Side Academy, they are co-conference champs and will host a First Round WPIAL playoff game for the first time since 2003 thanks to a win Saturday at Summit Academy. Senior quarterback Alex Isenberg rushed for a 30-yard touchdown and connected with Darius Frantz on a 17-yard touchdown pass in leading the Yellowjackets past the Knights 35-6.

Dylan Jones & Tyler Forbes - Laurel
Laurel has packed a mean punch all season in winning eight of nine games including wins over two conference champions, Clairton and North Catholic, but on this final night, Dylan Jones and Tyler Forbes were a lethal one-two punch against Shenango. Jones ran for 127 yards on 14 carries while Forbes had another outstanding night throwing for 132 yards and a touchdown, running for 58 yards on 14 carries and picking off his 7th pass of the season as the Spartans rolled to a 22-6 win over the host Wildcats.

Luke Shaffer - South Side Beaaver

In a win and your in regular season finale against their arch-rival, South Side Beaver and Luke Shaffer steppedup to the plate and went yard. Shaffer threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Gergen and socred on a 57-yard run as the Rams clinched a playoff berth with a 16-6 victory over the host Western Beaver Golden Beavers.

D.J. Oberdorf - Leechburg

After eight weeks of losing, the regular season concluded for Leechburg on a high note with a Class A Eastern Conference shutout of Wilkinsburg. It was time to celebrate thanks to sophomore quarterback D.J. Oberdorf who rushed for a one-yard score and tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to Joe Diani as the Blue Devils blanked the host Tigers 22-0.
