MSA Sports District College Football Recap for 10/31/09

Despite the wind and the rain, some great football action took place on Saturday in Western Pennsylvania, including a huge matchup in Divison III.

Here are recaps from all the games in the area.

Thomas More 14 - Washington & Jefferson 7

For the second straight year, the Saints take home the PAC title, this time on the road at Cameron Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Saints entered the game ranked 13th in the coaches poll and remain unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the PAC.

The 6th ranked Presidents led on a 12 yard touchdown pass from Gino Rometo to Jordan Roycroft with 2:28 left in the first quarter. That lead held up until the third when Trevor Stellman hit Chris Farley with a 25 yard touchdown with 7:41 remaining to knot the score at 7.

The game changer came on the next series when Rometo was intercepted by Zach Autenreib at the 28 yard line. Seven plays later Cordario Collier scored from 1 yard out to give Thomas More the lead for good.

W & J did not enter into Thomas More territory in the 4th quarter as the Presidents were held to 155 yards of offense.

Collier finished with 80 yards on 24 carries. Stellman threw for only 96 yards but ran for 48 more.

Rometo was 13 of 23 for 106 yards, he was intercepted 3 times. Craig Besong had 7 catches for 48 yards. The Presidents fall to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the PAC.

Slippery Rock 47 - Lock Haven 6

The Rock picked it’s 21st consecutive victory over the Bald Eagles in easy fashion. Akeem Satterfield ran for 107 yards on 19 carries and a pair of scores.

True freshman QB Ryan O’Rourke threw for 124 yards and a touchdown in his first college start. SayQuan Scott-Mitchell and Demarcus Cleckley also scored for the Rock.

The Slippery Rock defense forced 11 fumbles, recovering 4, blocked 3 punts and intercepted a pass. Lock Haven was held to minus 4 total yards for the game. Josh Walters hit Jay Hartman with a 21 yard pass for the Bald Eagles only points.

Slippery Rock is now 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven has now lost 20 straight, falling to 0-9.

Geneva 54 - Bethany 21

The Golden Tornado racked up 559 yards of offense, going to 7-1 on the season with the win at Reeves Field.

Geneva led 40-0 at the half on three Matt Barge touchdowns. Barge ran in from 3 and 11 yards out and caught a 25 yard scoring pass from David Girardi. Matt Dean added a 62 yard run and Jake Delmonico returned a punt 92 yards to the house. Soloman Hejirika returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the half.

Dean would score his 2nd touchdown on a 1 yard run early in the 3rd quarter. Gerald Muschette went 77 yards for a touchdown on the next GT series. Bethany finally got on the board on the first play of the 4th quarter when Dan Pegg hit Ed Holmes with a 50 yard bomb, Marcus D’Augair returned a blocked punt 33 yard for a score and Eric Walker went in from 1 yard out for the Bisons.

Muschette ran for 153 yards on 14 carries, Dean added 93 yards rushing. Girardi was 14 of 20 for 224 yards, Girardi was picked twice. A.J. Delmonico had 5 catches for 117 yards.

For Bethany, QB Dan Pegg threw for 300 yards on 26 of 48 with 3 interceptions. The Bisons fall to 2-6 on the season.

West Liberty 48 - Seton Hill 21

The 12th ranked Toppers win their first outright WVIAC crown since 1971 with the win at home. Zach Amedro threw for 333 yards and 4 touchdowns and ran for another. West Liberty led 34-7 at the half.

Kashif Wells caught 3 touchdown passes, Eddie Hills caught 10 passes for 175 yards. The Toppers are now 9-1 overall and ran the table in the conference going 7-0.

For Seton Hill, Nick Monteleone threw for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tyler Roby caught 4 passes for 110 yards and a pair of scores. Antwarn Jones ran for 92 yards and moved into 3rd place on the WVIAC all-time rushing list. Seton Hill falls to 1-9 overall, dropping 9 straight games and goes winless in the conference.

California 28 - Mercyhurst 7
The 20th ranked Vulcans put a knot around their 5th straight PSAC West title, they will play in the state championship game next week at Shippensburg. California now has won 20 consecutive games against PSAC-West teams.
Josh Portis threw for 242 yards and three touchdown passes, two of those to Terrance Moore. A.J. Jackson also caught a td pass and Shawn Johnson ran in from a yard out. Cal is now 8-2 overall, they finish 7-0 in divisional play. Josh Szeluga caught a touchdown pass from Joe Laffey for the only Mercyhurst score. Ben Jennings ran for 102 yards for the Lakers, who fall to 4-6 overall and finish 3-4 in the West.

Clarion 30 - Edinboro 17
The Golden Eagles continue their special season, hoping to move into the regional rankings this week after knocking off the 21st ranked Fighting Scots, who were ranked 6th in the region last week. Tyler Huether would run for 3 touchdowns for Clarion. Huether ended the day running for 91 yards and throwing for 169. Alfonso Hoggard added 99 yards rushing and a touchdown. Clarion finishes PSAC play at 6-1, they are now 7-3 overall. Edinboro will likely fall out of the regional rankings, they also lost QB Trevor Harris to an undisclosed injury late in the first half, he did not return for the second. The Fighting Scots fall to 7-3 overall and finish up at 5-2 in the West.

Gannon 29 - IUP 3
The Golden Knights have now won 3 straight and keep hopes alive for a winning season, which would be the first since 2003 for Gannon. QB Zach Boedicker ran for 2 touchdowns to stake Gannon to a 14-0 lead, he would toss a 31 yard pass to Matt Davis in the 3rd quarter for insurance. Tyler Batts ran for 97 yards including a 46 yard touchdown in the 4th quarter. Gannon is now 5-5 overall and finishes 3-4 in the PSAC-West. IUP falls to 4-6 overall and 1-6 in the PSAC, it’s their first losing season since 1982.

Robert Morris 9 - Sacred Heart 7
Garrett Clawson kicked 3 field goals and Raphael Johnson ran for 115 yards as Robert Morris won their 2nd game of the season at Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials defense held the Pioneers to just 1 yard on the ground. Steve Tedesco caught a 7 yard td pass from Dale Fink for the Sacred Heart score with 5:28 left in the game, but the Pioneers never got the ball back. Robert Morris is now 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the NEC. Sacred Heart falls to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

Wagner 23 - Duquesne 17 in Double Overtime
Jeremy Martinez scored on a 6 yard run to give Wagner the win at Rooney Field on Saturday. Wagner was led by Nick Doscher, who threw for 203 yards and ran for 132 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks are now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the NEC. Duquesne dropped it’s 4th straight game. The Dukes were led by Cleo Williams with 174 yards on 26 carries. Kevin Rombach threw for 113 yards and a touchdown. Duquesne is now 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the NEC.

Thiel 38 - St. Vincent 14
Willie Bova threw for 373 yards and 4 touchdowns and ran for another as the Tomcats go to 3-5 overall. Brendan Taylor caught 8 passes for 160 yards, Tyler DeJong added 7 catches and 2 touchdowns, Ross Gargano also caught a td pass. Hank Neurouter ran for a touchdown for the Bearcats and Jake Smith hit Christian Sutton with a td pass. St. Vincent is now 0-9 on the season.

Grove City 35 - Waynesburg 24
Andrew DiDonato threw for 172 yards and ran for 74 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wolverines win at home. Blaine Miller rushed for 108 yards on 33 carries and 2 touchdowns. Grove City is now 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the PAC. Waynesburg got 113 yards and 3 touchdowns from Justin Falconer, the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the PAC.

Carnegie Mellon 21 - Washington Mo. 13
CMU rallied from a 13-0 3rd quarter deficit for the win at Geisling Stadium. Phil Pantalone, A Lovrovich and Justin Pratt scored for the Tartans, who win their UAA conference opener. Pratt ended the day with 97 yards on 21 carries. CMU is now 5-3 overall. Steve Sherman connected with Greg Lachaud for a 10 yard touchdown for Washington, along with 2 Tim Johnson field goals. Washington falls to 3-5 ovrerall and 0-1 in the UAA.

Allegheny 24 - Wooster 21
The Gators rallied from a 14 point 4th quarter deficit. T.J. Salopek threw for 312 yards and ran for two touchdowns, including the game winner. Salopek also hooked up with Jake Vite 9 times for 168 yards, including a touchdown. Allegheny is now 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the NCAC. Austin Holter threw for 2 touchdowns for the Fighting Scots. He threw for 223 yards and ran for 55 more. Wooster falls to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC.
