Joey Tutro is a Junior at Shady Side Academy. He has played
hockey since the age of 5 throughout the U.S., Canada and
Europe for both amateur teams and school. In his Junior year
of high school he decided to play football, a game he has
always wanted to play but that hockey had interfered with.
According to his coaches he has excelled at his position as
defensive line.
He made 51 tackles, 18 solo and lead the team with 10 tackles
for losses. He tied the team with 2 sacks and recovered one
fumble. For his efforts he was awarded the honor of First Team
All Conference Defensive Line in the Allegheny Conference.
Academically, Joey's GPA is 3.6 while taking AP Calculus,
Physics and Latin III. As a Freshman he won a gold medal
for the National Latin Exam and won a silver medal in his
Sophomore year. Also as a Freshman, Joey was chosen to take
part in the International Exchange Program that would take
place in his Sophomore year. He went to Florence, Italy for
3 weeks in April of 2004 only after he had the recommendation
of all his teachers. In the summer of his Sophomore year Joey
was chosen and attended the National Leadership Conference
held at the University of Maryland. He was also nominated by
his teacher to be a National Scholar representing Pennsylvania
at the Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. He is a
member of the National Honor Society as well as Who's Who
Among American High School Students.
His community service includes working with special needs
children, as well as at the church summer singing program
for grade school children, Katrina relief fund raising
projects and Santa's workshop.

| How to Get Your Student in the Spotlight |
|
Balancing sports, schoolwork, and other activities is one of your
child's greatest challenges. We at MSA Sports would like to
spotlight some of these students who do just that - and do it WELL!
Parents, teachers, family members and friends, we need your help
identifying students to feature in the Student Athlete Spotlight.
Send a photograph of the student, along with some biographical
information. Student bio should be brief (2 or 3 paragraphs) and
include sport played and position, academic and other honors, GPA,
extracurricular activities, and any other information that helps to
showcase the achievements and character of this student athlete.
Once your child is selected we will send you a permission form to
allow us to post the student's picture and profile. Please
use this form to submit a student
for consideration.
